Anyone thinking about installing solar or upgrading an existing system needs to act now to beat expected price increases.

Several factors are in play to make 2020 the year costs start rising, as David Sharpe, of Adelaide’s Sharpe Energy Hub, explains.

“Right now solar panels are about the cheapest they will ever be,” he says. “Pricing will start to go up because government rebates are being phased out while our exchange rate is under threat from a weakening economy.”

Other developments will have a major influence on future pricing.

These include the fact that the top 25 to 30 manufacturers now have a 90 per cent share of the market.

“The good news is that solar panel technology has reached a level where it can’t easily be improved significantly,” says Mr Sharpe.

“The latest generation of market-leading panels has a surprisingly level of efficiency along with 25-year warranties. This means the payback time on systems is quicker than it ever has been.”

“You need fewer panels on your roof and the best quality panels that we supply and install can operate efficiently in overcast conditions as low as 50-60 per cent of sunlight.”

The latest monitoring technology allows households to remotely operate major appliances to use solar power before it goes into the grid.

Battery storage is the ultimate way to control domestic energy, especially if there is a large night-time demand.
