How does it work? A sacrificial anode is a metal rod, usually made from aluminium or magnesium and coated in zinc, that is fitted inside the tank. It attracts minerals and impurities that would otherwise react with the inside of your cylinder, causing rust.
The sacrificial anode slowly degrades and if it is not replaced within the time frame set by the manufacturer, you can say goodbye to your hot water cylinder.
