What’s the most important part of your water heater cylinder? It’s probably something you’ve never heard of: the sacrificial anode.

This protects the tank from corrosion.

How does it work? A sacrificial anode is a metal rod, usually made from aluminium or magnesium and coated in zinc, that is fitted inside the tank. It attracts minerals and impurities that would otherwise react with the inside of your cylinder, causing rust.
The sacrificial anode slowly degrades and if it is not replaced within the time frame set by the manufacturer, you can say goodbye to your hot water cylinder.

In most cases it needs to be replaced every five years – and as you’re dealing with boiling water and an electrical connection, it’s vital that you get a qualified technician to attend to this.

Sharpe technicians will quickly and efficiently inspect and change the anode as required. They will also check other aspects of your hot water system to ensure it is running at peak efficiency.

It’s useful to know that failing to replace a sacrificial anode is considered the biggest single cause of hot water cylinder failure. So extending the life of your hot water service is just a phone call away.
