SERVICE, QUALITY & HIGH STANDARDS

Derrick was a member of the SA Police Special Task and Rescue (STAR) Group when he and his team of 5 went to arrest a man.

On 3 May 1994 Senior Constable Derrick McManus was shot 14 times with a high-powered semi-automatic rifle in less than 5 seconds. He literally laughed at the time he was being shot and still laughs about it today.

After experiencing such traumatising events in his life, Derrick has been motivated to give inspirational speeches about conquering your fears as well as how to be successful.

His story is an inspiration of what can be achieved by sheer guts and setting achievable goals. It also highlights the part that belief in self and attitude play in achieving results and in the condition of the human spirit. Above all, the account of his experience is a motivational tale of one man’s positive approach against adversity and the success this approach achieved.

Derrick’s key points include:

•  The drivers for success in life or business are the same

•  Accept responsibility for building the life you want no matter the adversities

•  Preparation and attitude is the difference between mediocrity or success

•  Everyone has the success gene – learn how to turn it on

•  Focus on the skills you have and make the most of them – get over excuses

•  His survival and later thriving depended on teamwork … so does yours

•  How to build the confidence, courage and capacity to think, act and achieve BIG
