“While it is not mandatory to have safety switches in older homes, it is recommended that you consider having them installed,” it urges.

The Adelaide Metropolitan Fire Service is also clear on this topic. “Install earth leakage circuit breakers to all electrical circuits for additional life safety protection,” it recommends.

The best option is fitting multiple combination safety switches/circuit breakers to all circuits running through the switchboard.

Installing them is not an expensive upgrade. It will help bring your switchboard up to the best current specification.

Another bonus is that if one circuit overloads, it only shuts down that part of the system, not the entire power supply to the house e.g. if the iron trips the safety switch – why should all appliances in the house lose power and have to be reset (modem, TV’s, washing machine, etc).
