Halogen Downlight Danger

A house in the northern suburbs was left with $100,000 of damages after a fire started when cavity insulation came into contact with a downlight.

Halogen lights can reach temperatures of up to 350°C, and even traditional incandescent bulbs can reach a worrying 250°C.

Our skilled electricians are still visiting properties with electrical problems originating from the insulation found in roof and ceiling cavities. The high temperatures produced by certain forms of lighting can easily ignite debris or highly flammable insulation. Certain forms of insulation can also move and change shape over time, meaning there can still be a potential fire risk lurking in your home.

More advanced forms of lighting, such as LEDs, operate at much lower temperatures, and so offer a much safer alternative.

LEDs: The Sensible Switch

Downlights have seen an incredible rise in popularity due to fashionable looks and the way they disperse light. Most downlights still use inefficient Halogen globes, despite newer and more economical forms of lighting being available.

With LED globes, you’ll use less than a third of the electricity consumed by equivalent Halogen lights. As lighting can account for around 15-20% of your electricity bills, the savings can soon start to add up.

This doesn’t mean you have to compromise on quality, as LED technology has advanced to the point where the quality and vibrancy of light is similar to more established forms of lighting.

Also by using LED downlights, you will no longer have the expense and inconvenience of having to frequently change blown globes. LEDs have a much longer lifespan compared to traditional lighting, with a life expectancy of around 15 years, whilst Halogen lights will only last 1-3 years.

Can LEDs be easily fitted?

If you already have halogen downlights, then in many cases, these can just be removed and new LEDs quickly fitted.

If you’ve never had downlights, our experienced electricians should be able to efficiently install new lights to your property.

Remember, that unlike many halogen lights, LED globes don’t require transformers and this make the whole installation process much less complicated.
