Even mains-wired smoke alarms need the back-up battery checked and possibly replaced as it keeps the unit working in the event of a power cut.

There are two types of smoke alarm batteries: 10-year lithium and alkaline. Although the lithium ones have a lifespan of up to 10 years, never assume they are still working until you test them. Alkaline batteries should be replaced every year, even if they are still working.

The SA Metropolitan Fire Service advises that both hard-wired (mains powered, 240 volt) and battery operated smoke alarms are only manufactured to a standard that requires them to perform for 10 years.

It reminds householders that all smoke alarms need to be replaced after 10 years, even if they are mains powered.
