SERVICE, QUALITY & HIGH STANDARDS

Daylight saving starts on Sunday, October 2, and is the traditional time to check or change the batteries in your smoke alarms.

Even mains-wired smoke alarms need the back-up battery checked and possibly replaced as it keeps the unit working in the event of a power cut.

There are two types of smoke alarm batteries: 10-year lithium and alkaline. Although the lithium ones have a lifespan of up to 10 years, never assume they are still working until you test them. Alkaline batteries should be replaced every year, even if they are still working.

The SA Metropolitan Fire Service advises that both hard-wired (mains powered, 240 volt) and battery operated smoke alarms are only manufactured to a standard that requires them to perform for 10 years.

It reminds householders that all smoke alarms need to be replaced after 10 years, even if they are mains powered.

The start of daylight saving on October 2 is also the perfect time for householders to review their strategy in the case of a house fire and formulate an escape route from their building.

If you have moved into a new house in the past six months or so, now is the time to check you have the right type of smoke alarm fitted and it is in the correct location.

Sharpe Group technicians can advise on this and install upgrades, including connecting multiple smoke detectors and alarms, all hardwired to the mains power supply.

Our technicians also offer a comprehensive Electrical Safety Inspection, particularly relevant if your house is more than 25 years old and you have old wiring or any concerns about appliances operating erratically.
