Dimmers are devices connected to a light fixture and used to lower the brightness of light. By changing the voltage waveform applied to the lamp, it is possible to lower the intensity of the light output.
As great and bright as LED Lighting is, there is a time and place – ie. Living, Lounge, Bedroom – to have these dimmed. There are millions of wall dimmers installed in Australian homes today.
The fact is that these wall dimmers were never made for dimming LED lights and the rapid changeover to LED lights in homes represents a significant issue for home owners and electricians alike.

Selecting the right LED wall dimmer isn’t difficult. You or your electrician can identify a compatible LED wall dimmer from the packaging which will detail:
It's optimised for LED dimming
How many LED lights it can dim smoothly
If it's made for Australian conditions
The LEDSmart™ was created with one goal in mind – provide smooth, simple dimming for LED lights in your home.
It can be fitted to almost all common wall switch plates in Australia, provides outstanding dimming performance from 100% to 0% for dimming a huge range of quality LED lights and even some compact fluorescent lamps too.
Today things are different and when you change over your LED lights in your home it is advisable to change over your wall dimmers too. Why?
Because LEDs are electronics and they need electronics to control them properly. Gone are the days of passive lights globes in your ceiling.
Now, matching your LED lights with wall dimmers optimised for LED dimming is a simple and cost effective solution to achieve smooth, simple dimming for LED lights in your home.
The benefits of LED are primarily energy savings and length of life (longevity) which can be up to 10 times or more the life of traditional lamps.
But there’s little point in spending your money on an LED light upgrade and sacrificing quality of the lighting. Especially as you’ll have to live with it for about 10 years before needing to upgrade again! A simple and inexpensive way around this trap is to install wall dimmer optimised for LED dimming.
Changing your lights in your home over to LED makes good economic sense with savings greater than 50% in energy consumption and therefore significant electricity savings easily achieved.
However the changeover to LED is not smooth sailing for many home owners and there are multiple reports of people changing back to their old lamps after experiencing poor LED performance.
This is what some home owners experience after upgrading their lights to LED and attempting to dim them include:
There are two main items which contribute to this. The quality of the LED light being used and the age and quality of the wall dimmer being used.
There are thousands of different dimmable LED light fixtures on the market, but only three major types of dimming method: mains dimming, Dali or DMX. Let’s explain them:
Mains dimming
Mains dimming is the oldest dimming protocol and is the type most likely to be seen in the home, as well as in shops, bars and restaurants.
Dali
DALI (Digital Addressable Lighting Interface) is generally used to provide area lighting control over a number of lighting circuits. It relies on an additional two-core cable connection between the dimmer control and the LED driver.
DMX
DMX (Digital Multiplex) was developed originally for the entertainment world, where it’s used to provide dynamic lighting effects across very many lighting channels. In the architectural world, DMX works best for colour-changing and effects illumination, so there is a very close tie-in to LED performance.
So choose what kind of dimming you want before you select any LED luminaires.
Most lighting control systems offer a variety of dimming protocols, the languages which they use to communicate with the lamp or driver. When you’ve chosen the method that’s right for your installation, you need to get LED drivers which match the performance and the protocol.
There’s a simple commercial equation that should be borne in mind: cheap = risky. Avoid cheap specifications, particularly of products like LED tape and always check with the control manufacturer that your preferred LED product is compatible with their system.
It’s very important to check that the proposed dimmer works with the selected LED lamp before committing to a specification. Test before you buy.
Some domestic dimmers cannot ‘read’ the low loading of a LED lamp, so requiring an additional electrical load to be connected in order that the light will be recognized by the dimmer, contrary to any desire to reduce energy consumption, of course.
The simple answer is to use only those dimmers that have been designed for LED loads.
All retrofit lamps are intended to replace an existing filament lamp, tungsten or tungsten halogen. That means that there are alternatives across the range, from the ordinary GLS lamp (the light bulb), to directional lamps for spotlighting and even chandelier-style candle lamps, some of which work to great, sparkling, effect. The inherent problem in every retrofit lamp is the limitation on physical size.
A retrofit lamp is no good if it doesn’t fit in the intended light fixture. And however perverse this may sound, that essential feature of a retrofit lamp hasn’t stopped some LED lamp manufacturers from producing lamps that simply don’t fit. It might make for a better engineered product, but it may not fit into the required fixture – so it’s good to check.
It’s never a good idea to mix LEDs from different manufacturers on the same dimming circuit. On the basis that every LED will have its own design of electronic circuitry, the dimmer probably won’t be capable of providing a common signal to each light source. This is a recipe for flicker and hum.
Remote Controls for dimming are a great way to add smart home functionality to your home. Also, with a remote control light switch installed you can turn on and off your lights remotely.
If you want to take it a step further you can connect your remote control light switch to a compatible voice assistant like Alexa, Siri or Google Home and control your smart remote control light switch using voice commands like “Alexa, turn on bedroom lights.” or “Alexa, set living room lights to 50%.”
Millions of people have upgraded their homes with smart thermostats and smart doorbells but many fewer have upgraded their home with smart lighting even though it’s one of the best upgrades you can make to a house and it can significantly increase the value of your home when you go to sell it.
So why have so few people done smart light switch upgrades? Because most people think it’s too complicated or that they don’t really need it, but in reality smart remote control light switches offer a number of benefits that most people aren’t even aware of.
Upgrading your lighting to remote control switches switches can help you in the following ways: You can save energy with remote control light switches because you can turn off lights remotely if you left them on.
