How to stop switchboards meltdowns

Got any idea what’s going on in your switchboard?

I do. It’s under stress all the time as current works its way back and forth through the cables, switches and safety devices.

One of the biggest issues that develop over time is cables coming loose as a result of the minuscule but long-term vibration set up by this constant flow of current.

Signs that this is happening can vary from a slight humming or buzzing sound to an unidentifiable burning smell of plastic.

Nearly all new builds and renovations 10 years or newer should be up to date with the current safety regulations.

But do you really know this is the case? Best to call a licensed and qualified professional to double-check.

Switchboard fires can quickly destroy property as flames climb up the wall cavity into the roof space. So don’t take chances.

Safety switches should be tested every three months to make sure they are operating. But are they protecting the circuits their label says? Only a licensed professional can confirm this.

Heat damage to substandard or incorrectly installed cables can occur over time. If not detected it can short out circuits and create a risk of fire.

Charred or discoloured switches and outlets are an instant indication that the circuit is overloaded and potentially dangerous.

The connecting cable could run to the other side of the house along timber framework and through insulation. Perfect conditions to spark a meltdown and fire.

Vermin can get into switchboards and cause equally catastrophic results.

Having the correct safety devices in your switchboard should eliminate the risk of electrocution and fires but the overall system is only as strong as its weakest link.

If you have any doubts or your switchboard is older than 10 years get it checked out for peace of mind.
