Warning, Headed
A Quick Thinking Subscriber Saved Her Home and Herself
We speak alot about being vigilant, have safety inspections and look for potential signs of disaster, in this instance it was a good ending to the story
When a northern suburbs resident noticed her power wasn’t behaving as it should and with constant safety switch jumps, she thought it prudent to call Sharpe Services. It was with the last power outage that had her concerned as the safety switch wouldn’t reset.
Our experienced tech arrived on the scene and like all professionals with as many years under one’s belt as Brian, he made some quick observations.
From the recent wild weather, he noticed that the there may be an issue with the neutral wiring from the street connection. From his vantage point it looked broken.
A check on the switchboard showed a melted wire to the safety switch and then on entering the premise Brian could smell burning. With ladder in hand an urgent excursion to the roof space revealed what he suspected, further melted wires and roof trusses smouldering away. Quite literally minutes from a full blown disaster!
With the neutral not being connected properly, the old wiring of the house couldn’t take the extra load of voltage being delivered to the property.
Some quick acting fire extinguishing from Brian and clearing of other flammable material from the area, the fire department was called to confirm the initial hazard was contained.
‘it was great timing that I was there when I was, any later and the fire-ees said we’d be looking at a pile of smoking remains where the house was’, said Brian.
The property is now having the wiring and switchboard repaired and some further older appliances being replaced after some over-voltage damage. All being taken care of by he team at Sharp Services.
