Lady Escapes Evaporative Aircon Fire

A woman had to escape through her bedroom window due to an airconditioner house fire – at Dover Gardens, which had set her ceiling alight – on 9/9/15.

The lady first saw smoke and fire from the air conditioning ducts in the ceiling in the hallway of the Neath Rd property. “It was pouring melted plastic from the roof,” she said. “I heard a bang, I thought it was something collapsing in the roof.”

“I saw the fire just burning through the roof … I could smell the plastic burning.” She yelled at her housemate, who was banging on her door, to call the fire brigade.

The 21-year-old immediately grabbed her wallet and bag before jumping through her bedroom window. The front room’s window had shattered from the heat and flames were shooting through the roof when emergency services arrived.

Four MFS units with 18 firefighters were dispatched to the property just after 1.30pm. There were numerous 000 calls about the fire in the house’s roof. The firefighters took 20 minutes to get the fire under control and stop it from spreading to a neighbouring property. A MFS spokesperson said the fire spread quickly through the timber walls and furniture.

The fire caused extensive damage to the property, estimated around $150,000. Fire cause investigators are trying to determine its exact cause.
