It’s Flue Season
A Rusty Flue Is a Key Indicator
On how old your unit is. Which is the perfect sign that it’s time for a service or updated unit.
It’s an easy inspection for anyone to do as well. Simply go outside and look up! A great trick for when you’re inspecting a house to purchase, or getting your dwelling winter ready. If you’re not sure on what to look for, our technicians can conduct and on-site inspection and service as required.
Not only does a sign of rust speak to you about the age of the unit, it can also be a key indicator of other possible issues with the system in general.
Importantly, an inefficient system can affect your gas bill, leading to higher monthly charges. If you’ve noticed any bill creep, then it’s time to book a service.
Aside from costing you more each month, a rusty flue can allow water into the system itself, causing such issues as:
- Water ingress into a gas heater can potentially lead to a fire if it affects the gas control valve or other components, causing a malfunction and potentially leading to a large flame or explosion during ignition.
- Water or moisture can penetrate into the gas control valve and cause deposits to form. These deposits can interfere with the valve’s proper operation, potentially leading to gas being supplied during the ignition/pilot proving period, even when it should not be.
A rusty flue can allow water into the roof cavity
- Whilst it may not affect the heater directly, this problem will certainly affect your budget! Moisture inside your roof can cause all manner of issues, from structural distress to stained and bowed ceilings. Both of which are more expensive to fix than a new flue or service to the system.
CO Buildup – The Silent Killer!
- Water in the heater can interfere with the combustion process, causing incomplete burning of gas. This results in CO production, which is a colorless, odorless gas that can be fatal.
