CO The Invisible Culprit!
A Terrible and Preventable Cause of Many Poisonings Across Adelaide Every Autumn & Winter
Carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning can occur when a gas heater malfunctions, leading to incomplete combustion and the release of CO into the air. This can happen if a heater is faulty, not properly serviced, or installed incorrectly. Symptoms of CO poisoning include headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, and fatigue.
Unfortunately the main victims of such an event happening are the aged and very young in our homes.
The good news is that these occurrences can be prevented by following some easy steps:
- Regular Service: Have your gas heater serviced by a licensed gas fitter every two years, or as recommended by the manufacturer.
- Carbon Monoxide Detectors: Install and maintain carbon monoxide detectors in your home.
- Ventilation: Ensure adequate ventilation when using gas heaters, especially unflued heaters.
- No Running: Avoid leaving gas heaters running when you are not present or aware particularly overnight when you are sleeping.
- Don’t Use Incorrectly: Never use heaters indoors that are marked for outdoor use only.
