As winter starts to bite, many householders are turning to reverse-cycle airconditioners to keep them warm.

Proven to be the most energy-efficient form of heating, reverse-cycle or heat pumps are gaining popularity.

But Sharpe Group spokesman David Sharpe has a timely reminder for owners.“Changing over from the cool cycle to heat places the highest stress on your system,” he says.

“This is why pre-winter servicing is vital to maximise heating performance. “If you haven’t done it already, you should put it on your to-do list.”

A preventive service schedule ensures peak operating efficiency and prolongs the system’s lifespan.

Also remember that neglected air conditioners are a fire risk. Authorities have long recommended a minimum yearly service by a qualified professional. As well as being a potential fire risk, a badly maintained system can dramatically increase winter electricity bills.

Servicing includes cleaning the system, checking for any problems or potential issues and adjusting for peak operation. “Reverse-cycle heating is the most energy efficient way to maintain your household’s comfort level during winter, but only when your system is tuned to run to its original specification,”  Mr Sharpe says.

There are several obvious symptoms that require a call for professional help: Does your unit take a long time to a Sharpe Group airconditioner technician checking and servicinga ducted AC unit. Picture: SUPPLIED heat the room? Do you hear clicking or cracking sounds?

Does the fan stop when heating starts? All these are an indication of problems that need urgent attention.

It is also normal for the outdoor condenser unit to produce water during the winter heating operation. However, the small overflow pipe located under the unit in the roof space should never flow. If it does, shut down the entire system and call a technician. Householders can undertake some regular maintenance tasks by cleaning the filter once a month by vacuuming or rinsing in water and drying it before refitting.
